Rux was just a 12-week-old puppy when his owner cut off his ears with a pair of rusty kitchen scissors. If the Animal Services officer from McKamey hadn’t stepped in when she did, the puppy would have bled to death. His ears were cut all the way to the main arteries; there was so much blood loss that it was unclear whether or not Rux would live. But Rux is a survivor. He was taken to RIVER veterinary emergency hospital where his badly damaged ears were repaired by their caring medical team. His ears healed during almost two months of loving protection at McKamey, and Rux finally got his day in court. His former owner was prosecuted for animal cruelty and received a year of probation where he can have no contact with dogs or he will go to jail for at least 11 months, a $1200 restitution payable to the McKamey Center and 10 days of community service.
Rux, has been adopted by the officer that saved his life. He is the McKamey poster dog helping give local pets a voice against animal cruelty. It is the staff at McKamey’s goal to have Rux’s winning personality and gentle nature help break the stereotype against pit bulls.
